Calligraphy artist Wang Chang in the end of the YuanDynasty lived in seclusion in Gaoting Mountain. He planted wintersweet aroundhis residence, and named it ‘You Mei Pavilion’, meaning ‘to be friend with thewintersweet’. People criticized him for it, and said friendship can only existbetween one man and another. Liu Ji, an officer in Hangzhou at the timedefended him, and said that wintersweet has the fearless quality of being nobleand unsullied, which is better than people clawing for profits, being a recluse.Wang Chang has the freedom to call the wintersweet ‘friend’. And he referencedanother incident, in which a man bowed to an angry frog for its bravery, tojustify Wang Chang’s choice. After hearing this, Wang Chang was pleasantlysurprised, and considered Liu Ji to be his confidant. He also asked Liu Ji towrite an essay about his pavilion. Liu Ji, more well-known under another nameLiu Bowen,was a famous founding member and military counselor of theMing Dynasty. He resided in Hangzhou several times in the end of the YuanDynasty, and took office as educational administrator at the time. His essay‘the You Mei Pavilion’, made the You Mei Pavilion in the Gaoting Mountainseternally famous.
