Wang Meng (alias Wang Shuming, 1308-1385) of Huzhouwas one of the four famous painters of the Yuan Dynasty and enjoyed a highprestige in the field and history of art. With the direct influence of hismaternal grandfather Zhao Mengfu and the teaching of Huang Gongwang, Wu Zhengand Ni Zan, all influential painters, his landscape works possessed theirunique style. At the end of the dynasty, he abandoned his office and became ahermit in the Yellow Crane mountains, farming, reading, painting, and writing.In 1380, he was appointed magistrate of Taianzhou. He made intimate friendswith the court officials, including Hu Weiyong, then prime minister of the MingDynasty. In 1380, Hu was put to death for his evil intentions by Emperor ZhuYuanzhang and he got involved and later died in prison. Wang lived in themountains for over 20 years and painted the landscape and routine life there,his famous works include Humble cottagein Autumn Mountain, Reading in Spring Mountain, Tea Cooking, Spring Plowing atthe Entrance of the Valley, etc, in which he recorded his accommodationwith thorough details, and inscribed himself as ‘Mountain Folk of Huanghe’‘Woodman of Huanghe’. His works are dear resources of history and literature ofthe Gaoting Mountains.
